  1. Need for power sell off questioned after report of gas pipeline failure

MILLBUSH, W.Va. — The coal industry is warning West Virginia residents to exercise extreme caution about electricity supply in the face of a recent report of a pipeline failure in the coal country town of Millbills.

The report, published on Saturday in the Washington Post, said a line from the coal country town of Vassalboro began leaking on May 12. The line carrying coal that's transported for manufacturing companies to Virginia failed during an overnight shift after a hydraulic-pressure leak developed near the town's pipeline system.

The report said the failure came after the spill from the Vassalboro spill went undetected for three months before finally reaching West Virginia's power grid.

"When a leak like this happens in the coal country, it can destroy the infrastructure of many communities," said Dan Schmitt, spokesman for the West Virginia Power Association. "It really creates a ripple effect throughout the entire distribution chain."

This morning, the company reported that production at the Vassalboro Power Plant had increased 1.9 percent on the week ending June 1.

On Wednesday, the company said it would increase production in Vassalboro to meet an increased demand by its own power plant.

Power production in the coal country town grew 3.3 percent, according to the West Virginia Power Association.

The power industry is also struggling with natural gas production in recent weeks and was forced to announce that 1,200 jobs will go to Pennsylvania this month after Gov. Tom Wolf announced a $300 million tax break for the coal-mining state.

The coal country has produced more than half of the country's coal and about 40 percent of its natural gas. The U.S. coal industry produced 11.1 million metric tons of coal in 2010.

In Virginia, which relies heavily on coal for power, the coal country has lost jobs and businesses in recent months after another 1,000 job loss from coal industry in West Virginia in 2011. The unemployment rates among the coal country workforce have reached 26 percent.

With its own coal power plant closing its doors, the coal country has no additional source of energy and has been dealing with a lack of new jobs in the years since the plant closed.

The coal town, as much as 80 percent of which is located in the northern reaches of Appalachia, is the region where the United Mine Workers of America is based. UMWA was founded by John William Hines Jr., an organizer for the Black Cross Workers union.

In 2014, the United Mine Workers of America, one of the country's largest unionized workers, decided to take up the fight to fight against coal employment in West Virginia.

Govt shifts position on cdeps in India" will be published by the agency on 11 September.

Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy declined to comment on the agency's move. However, it did say that, "We are providing support to government-run and other non-government organisations in the field of biofuels and sustainable energy. Our ministry also has an initiative to help the poor achieve affordable and sustainable energy," it said.

"What India can do to ensure sustainable development for all its people is encouraging more private sector investment," K. Rameshkumar, secretary general of Indian Biofuels Association (IBGA), told The Hindu. "We hope that with this change in policy, as many private companies will decide to invest in India. And they should be encouraged."

"There is much that India can learn from countries like Germany," he added.

India's government has been vocal in its concerns about India's biofuel production. Last year, for instance, the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy held a meeting with the National Energy Corp (NEPCO) to address the country's biofuel needs. In the meeting held at the NEPCO's headquarters in Delhi, government officials were given recommendations as to what biofuels should look like, when to use them and how to reduce their production costs.

Recently, the Indian ministry has also proposed a ban on non-renewable fuels like paper and cardboard.

"It's important that India moves from an all-weather biofuel to a climate-friendly renewable fuel industry by focusing more on biorefineries, more on biofuels and less on conventional fuels," said Rameshkumar.

  2. Hunter motorists urged to take care on wet roads as wind chill continues to ease

The driver of a vehicle hit by a truck while driving in the Adelaide CBD in the early hours of Sunday morning (9 November) is expected to survive but is in a serious but stable condition.

Police and emergency services have launched a massive search, with officers scouring surrounding roads while teams of sniffer dogs and aircraft have been dispatched to the city and surrounding areas.

The driver of the semi-truck, whose identity is yet to be known, was seriously injured but has been named locally as 32-year-old Anthony Brown.

Mr Brown, who was visiting his sister in London with his family, had been on holiday in the Adelaide CBD.

He was walking with his wife, a daughter and younger brother to work in the area when they were hit by the vehicle at 3.08am.

"The van driver had to be extricated," said Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Burgess.

Police appealed for people who witnessed the incident to come forward.

"I wouldn't want any other Australians or visitors to worry on Sunday morning in Adelaide. The South Australian Government and our police agencies are working hard to save as many lives as possible," Acting Minister for the Environment Tom Koutsantonis said.

"Australians and tourists are always at the front line when it comes to emergency services and this incident highlights the importance of keeping our roads open."

Mr Koutsantonis said police were investigating whether the vehicle involved may have been involved in a serious collision.

"There's a risk to anyone who is driving a car in any weather conditions; that's why we've worked hard to prepare for our drivers' safety, and we know they aren't going to do anything irresponsible on our roads," he said.

Cameron says Britain will give extra protection to its police and military

Oxfam confirms it has set up a £500 million fund to help vulnerable children

David Cameron wants to protect a majority of police officers if he is re-elected this May.

The Prime Minister said on the Andrew Marr Show that if he lost, he would give them a £500 million "war chest" as a guarantee against any resignations.

The extra powers are required for police and security forces to do more to protect people without their identity being revealed.

The move comes amid concerns raised in reports by the BBC and the Guardian that police could be used to spy on people, despite the fact that they are not actually under investigation at present.

It comes as the Conservative party continues to struggle after the loss of their 2015 general election.

The Government hopes to win back some of the swing voters who voted for it. But they also face the problem of an electoral system which sees it relatively easy for a party to win back the upper house, but highly difficult for a minority government to regain it.

If Mr Cameron wins the next election on 8 May, the new force set up by his Government will get additional powers, along with existing provisions which include extra powers in case of terrorist incidents.

The Government also said in the Government website: "This extra power will provide a safe and secure home for police officers, and can ensure they know what they are doing, and are at ease when they are travelling.

"We will increase access to anti-terrorism arrangements and counter terrorism and cyber security advice and training, and are introducing powers to tackle money laundering and cyber security fraud."

Former Conservative Minister Ken Clarke said the additional powers were part of an attempt to "restore some of the Conservative party's sense of national purpose" by improving the overall effectiveness of the police and to improve the country's capacity to deal with crime.

The Prime Minister did not give any details on how the new powers would be applied, but Mr Clarke told the BBC he had asked David Cameron to announce plans for the extra powers.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: "There is nothing in this Government's manifesto or subsequent letters to the House of Commons that implies it will not introduce extra powers to deal with security threats and counter-terrorism, as I have been clear on since taking up the post last year.

"Our existing powers are sufficiently robust and efficient to deal with all kinds of threats. We believe a new set of powers would be in the best interests of th

      1. DigitalOcean
      2. Linode
      3. AcrosVM
      4. BudgetVM
      5. Host1Plus

Citing current and former senior administration officials, the report claims the Israeli espionage operation began shortly after the U.S. began secretive talks with Iran in 2012. American officials expected Israel to spy on the negotiation process because even the closest of allies spy on each other. According to the WSJ, U.S. intelligence agencies actually found out about the spying because they were already spying on Israel.

"The White House discovered the operation, in fact, when U.S. intelligence agencies spying on Israel intercepted communications among Israeli officials that carried details the U.S. believed could have come only from access to the confidential talks, officials briefed on the matter said," wrote the WSJ, who also corroborated its story with unnamed European and Israeli sources.

The real issue, according to administration officials, is that Israel used that stolen intelligence to deliberately politicize the negotiation process.

"It is one thing for the U.S. and Israel to spy on each other," an unnamed senior official told the WSJ. "It is another thing for Israel to steal U.S. secrets and play them back to U.S. legislators to undermine U.S. diplomacy."

According to the report, Israel shared the stolen information with Republican leaders hoping that they could use it to persuade more Democrats to support new sanctions against Iran - something President Barack Obama has repeatedly insisted would harm the negotiation process.

Israel denied the allegations, claiming it obtained the information by monitoring Iranian leaders and other sources.

"These allegations are utterly false," one senior Israeli official in the Prime Minister's office . "The state of Israel does not conduct espionage against the United States or Israel's other allies."

Another Israeli official, outgoing Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman, told the country's Army Radio on Tuesday that Israel "reached a decision a long time ago not to spy on the US and I haven't come across anyone who has violated that instruction in several decades," .

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki commented Tuesday saying, "We will continue our close military intelligence and security cooperation with Israel and that hasn't changed," .

Psaki said that the U.S. briefs members of Congress on the Iran talks, adding that it's "an absurd notion that Congress would have to rely on any foreign government to gain insight on the administration's nuclear negotiations with Iran."

"We have spoken in the past of our concern about leaks of sensitive information, and our concern that sensitive information remain private," Psaki added.

Obama said Tuesday that he won't be commenting on the reports,
